This church was built on the ashes of the black congregation’s first church, built in 1867. On April 13, 1919, a white mob burned that church to the ground, then lynched two black brothers — one only 13 years old — and threw the bodies into the flames. The mob rioted after the two white officers died in a shootout. The violence marked a beginning of the Red Summer.
