Isabel Wilkerson at Decatur Book Festival

I had the pleasure of introducing Isabel Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Others Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration to a full crowd at the Decatur Book Festival Saturday, Sept. 1. It was a great talk by the former New York Times reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner. Her commitment to telling a story is astounding: She devoted 15 years and conducted more than 1,200 interviews to lead her to three people who became the focus of her book.
As I wrote in a book review for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution when it first came out in 2010: “[I]f you want to learn about what being a migrant felt like, read Wilkerson. Her intimate portraits convey — as no book prior ever has — what the migration meant to those who were a part of it.”
